Snapdeal bags government’s energy saving LED bulbs contract

Recently, Amazon piloted a bicycle delivery service to reduce its carbon footprint. Now it is the turn of online marketplace Snapdeal to do something for the environment as it has partnered with the government-run Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), to sell LED bulbs on its ecommerce platform.
“Our goal is to reach out to as many people to realise the goal of an energy efficient India. Our partnership with Snapdeal is an attempt in this direction. In today’s time, e-commerce is a platform for maximising reach and I am hopeful that this partnership will make the programme more accessible to the people and drive it across the country,”
Snapdeal will sell the bulbs at Rs.99, to help EESL promote the Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP), which aims to swap incandescent bulbs for LED bulbs.

Replacing 77 crore incandescent bulbs would achieve:

  • > Reduction of 20,000 MW load
  • > Energy savings of 105 billion KWh
  • > Green House Gas (GHG) emissions savings of 80 million tonnes annually
  • > Estimated yearly saving in electricity bills of Rs 40,000 crore
  • “Snapdeal is proud to be chosen as a partner by the Power Ministry to support its DELP programme. With our unmatched reach in metros as well as tier 2 and beyond, and our huge customer base, we will be able to support the Government achieve its target of replacing incandescent bulbs with LEDs,” stated Rahul Taneja, Vice President, Category Management, Snapdeal.
