In a bid to make commercial operations easier for its sellers, leading ecommerce bellwetherAmazon has announced a program called ‘Automated Returns’. The company will be taking up returns for orders under Rs. 5,000.
“All Easy Ship returns that you receive from September 1, 2016 will be automatically covered under this programme,” says the company in an email to its sellers.
Easy Ship is Amazon’s delivery service for its sellers. The company collects and delivers shipments from the seller to the customer’s doorstep.

Tackling the recurring problems related to returns

Automated Returns is expected to be launched in September, and will allow sellers to issue manual refunds for orders above Rs. 5,000. In light of the upcoming festive season, this might be just the thing to help sellers.
Electronics, mobiles, apparel and jewellery face the problem of almost 50% returns. As a result, sellers find themselves spending a large chunk of their time and other resources dealing with the returns, and issuing refunds. Amazon’s new initiative might help ease some of these problems. Most leading ecommerce companies including Flipkart have reduced the returns period from 30 days to 10 days, a welcome change for the sellers.
However, all this back and forth has left the sellers a disgruntled bunch. The All India Online Vendors Association (AIOVA) has written to the country’s prime minister complaining about the problems they face due to the unstable policies of ecommerce companies. The AIOVA says that they are unable to handle their orders due to the chaos caused by the multiple changes in the companies’ policies.
